James's Story
Life
After Brown, where I majored in chemistry, I went to grad school at RPI,
receiving a PhD in organic chemistry. While at RPI, I became an even bigger
hockey fan and professionally became interested in chemical analytical spectroscopy,
particularly nmr (nuclear magnetic resonance). I nearly got drafted, so I
joined the AFROTC unit at RPI, got commissioned, and spent three months
active duty at Dover AFB as a computer officer. Fabulous job, probably should have
stayed in, but I always wanted to do chemistry. I spent all my time in the reserves,
but did nothing else leaving as a captain in rank. I got a postdoc at
MIT in synthesis for two years. I worked at Brown (Chemistry) for
22 1/2 years as an instrumentation manager. After that I worked as an
nmr consultant and then held a contract nmr job at Millennium
Pharmaceuticals (now Takeda in Cambridge) for 7 months. I had another contract

ob at Abbott, now AbbVie, in Worcester for four months. Now I am
looking again for a new position. Overqualified and overeducated and too old].
College
I majored in chemistry with emphasis on organic. I had
student jobs including working at the refectory in various
positions and as a room service waiter in a local hotel.
Labs and studying and working kept me busy all the time.
Did no socializing at all and had no girlfriends either. Also
could not participate in band or the golf team.
Too much else to do. It was much tougher than high school.
On the other hand, grad school was easier than Brown was, but
obviously took more time start to finish. MIT is really the place to go
if you like science. They've got money, dedication, and a lot of people
who are just as motivated as you are. I suppose the pressure is higher
on the undergrads and even the grad students. No shortage of brains in
Cambridge!
